Most women in India don’t leave their houses without cosmetics on them. I happened to do a personal survey which actually states that most women can’t step out without sunscreen, eyeliner, lip balm, face cream, kohl, lipstick etcetera. Most people I spoke to use one or the other product from Lakme and the surprising part is, they didn’t know that Lakme was an Indian brand.
Lakme started as a 100% subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills (Tomco). It was named after the French operaLakmé, which itself is the French form of Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) who is renowned for her beauty.
Simone Tata joined the Lakme Board in 1962 and later went on to become the chairperson in 1982.
Simone Tata was born and brought up in Geneva, Switzerland and graduated from Geneva University. She visited India as a tourist in 1933, where she met Naval H. Tata. They got married in 1935 and Simone settled permanently in Mumbai.
Later in the year, 1996 Lakme was sold to HUL With the money they made, they started Trent Ltd. where Simone worked as the Non-Executive Chairman till the year 2006.
Simone has actually created a buzz on cosmetics back in the 1960s where makeup was considered anti-cultural. Her courage is quite commendable.
